Bennett's Birthday goes to SoCal

Disneyland Round #2.

Where do I even begin?
So my mom called me back in September and wanted us to travel down to California on honor of Bennett's birthday instead of her coming up here.  So we booked the flights and made it happen!  A week in disney with a 2 and 3 year old! sounds exhausting. Well, it was,  but it was also amazing.
We figured out that it would be more cost effective to buy annual disney passes then it would be to get the socal pass (3 days at disney, 1 lego land, 1 sea world), since we would be coming back to Disney in the spring or next fall and this go around we didn't have to pay for either kid.

Sunday Day #1.  We checked in and got our annual passes and entered Disneyland.  Waiting in line for Peter Pan for nearly 45 minutes. Bennett dancing to pass the time.
Went on as many rides as we could before our kids were tuckered out (11am) and then walked back to the hotel.  We stayed at the Anabella which was Lance's mom's favorite hotel to stay at.   It's spanish style and directly across the street from Disney making it an easy commute with a stroller.  It's definitely an older hotel, but the best part was that inside the room it had a separate room with a full size daybed that we used as the kids room.  They slept together peacefully most nights and we could have the tv on or talk and didn't have to worry they'd wake up.

Each and everyday our kids took between a 2.5 and 4 hour nap! So we also got a daily nap in...it was amazing!  They did however wake up between 5am and 6am every morning regardless of how late we stayed up.  My little early birds.  It ended up being okay that they woke up early because it got the rest of us to get up and start getting ready, have a sit down breakfast, and be at the park gates when they opened.

My mom joined us about 50% of the time we were in the park.  She rode all the rides with the kids, and had a blast watching them get so excited over everything.  My mom and stepdad now have their own annual passes.  I'll be interested to know how many times they use them before we come down again :-D

Bennett became infatuated with having his face painted while at Disneyland.  He was surprisingly very still as they painted his spider and batman and went around the rest of the day pretending to be that superhero.

When at Disney its a must to try all of the crazy treats and food!! This guy is a churro ice cream sandwich located at California Churro in Downtown Disney.  It was delicious and I didn't share.
Jillian LOVE LOVE LOVED all of the carousels.  She would literally be crying, kicking, and screaming when the ride ended.

We enjoyed two days of breakfast at the Grand Californian Hotel's restaurant Storyteller Cafe.  This place is legit.  They had 4 characters walking around from table to table.  Bennett was able to meet all of them several times throughout our meal and it was a breakfast buffet.  Sounds like a cruise to me!! (DREAMY).  Jillian was a hater and scared of all of the characters, but Bennett was almost so excited he chased a few of them to different tables.

Somehow we spent 6 days at Disneyland and never got on this new Cars ride.  Granted it was UEA weekend so the last two days Disney was PACKED with people,  but we were really trying to get Bennett go to on the "big" rides only to learn that he is one finger (literally) too short for the rides!!

On Friday afternoon we left Anahiem and traveled south to San Diego where my brother and his family live.  We went to dinner and celebrated Bennett turning 3 with a "white captain Jake cake" per Bennett's instructions.
Even my new nephew Zar got in on the excitement.
Saturday we traveled to the coast and let the kids see the beach for their 2nd time.  Bennett the neat freak that he is was really mad when I took off his shoes and made him walk in the sand, but by the end of the morning he was burying my feet, and throwing sand all about.   Jillian as you can tell had a blast even with a wet sock covering her poor exposed blister.

Thanks mom for inviting us to come out and enjoy a week of family time.  I sure to love these two little tikes and am grateful for the memories.

Disneyland First Timers

With Lance off to a real estate conference for a week in Vegas I thought, hmm.. a week at home by myself or a week in California with my mom?  No brainer.  Off to California we went.  I thought it would I was prepared to handle my kids on vacay but Jillian decided to be independent and be a crib crawler-outer. Oy vey!  We spent Monday afternoon through Thursday evening in Garden Grove with my mom.  It was refreshing to be in California and had a lot of fun taking the kids to Disneyland and the beach for their first time.  It was most definitely hot and I don't think  I will commit to going to any theme park in the middle of July again, but the kids didn't seem to mind.   Bennett was captivated by the fireworks, parade, characters, and rides.  He loved the little kid coaster in toon-town.  Jillian, however, was deathly afraid of almost every ride except Dumbo, Carousel and the Rocketship ride.  Those she wanted to go on again and again.   We also took them to Huntington Beach where Bennett got trampled by the first wave and refused to go in the water, and had panic attacks over his hands being "dirty" with sand.  Toddlers will be toddlers right??

And surprise surprise! I'm an auntie!!  My brother and his girlfriend Marci had a baby boy, Zar on July 19th.  It was perfect timing that I just so happened to be in California so we ventured down on the eve of his birth to meet him.  A few days past his due date and a spitting image of my brother.  I'm  excited to see how similar Bennett and Zar will look because I think Bennett is the spitting image of my brother.   To say my mom is in love is an understatement.  Zar took a liking to Grandma as well... their first interaction she went through 4 diapers changing him because every time he was on a clean one he would poop again!

Spring 2016

Spring of 2016 had a lot of ups and a lot of downs for our family.  Here are just a few:

Bennett tried to be his independent self and cook a scone in the microwave.  He got it out of its plastic baggie, put it on a plastic plate and put it in the microwave.  Unfortunately scones don't need to be reheated for 5 minutes....  I was upstairs and Bennett came up to greet me by saying something I couldn't understand.  As we were talking I smelt smoke and said, "Bennett, is the oven on?" He sheepishly said "yea....." and I went running down the stairs to see our microwave in flames.  Needless to say a fire extinguisher's residue is toxic so we had to get a new microwave.  Luckily everyone was save. No harm done.

Bennett enjoyed some quality time with "papa"
Fun trips to the Museum of Curiosity.  We have a season pass and its a perfect outing now that these two walk independently.

They LOVE the Water Works exhibit within the museum.  I usually have to bring a change of clothes for both of them because the smocks really don't do much.
.... as you can see one time I forgot to bring Jillian a change of clothes so she went naked in Bennett's jacket.

Late night Costco runs because my kids love Costco as much as I do (which is a lot)
Tony stepped down as the head coach of the Chargers so Lance stepped in and coached the boys throughout all of Spring Fling.  They ended up winning the championship as well as went undefeated in their Easter Las Vegas tournament. Go Lance!!
I was really honored to receive an award from BYU's Nursing program.  I have worked with several student nurses throughout my three and a half years as a nurse.  I remember the mentors who taught me and really impacted my practice as a nurse, and I remember those nurses who were annoyed and tired when they had students.  I promised myself that I would always strive to be that exciting and fun nurse who gave my students a good experience and apparently it paid off.  Two BYU students nominated me for the Outstanding Student Mentor award :)
... as mentioned above... we spent A LOT of time in the gym (like nightly) throughout April/May.  Clearly Jillian had had enough.
Many fun days at our neighborhood park.
Kiddie swimming pool days in the backyard.

Yardwork.  For some reason Bennett and Lance have bonded over our lawn care. Bennett grabs "his hat" and "his mower" and "his weed whip (my mop)" and follows lance around the yard.

Jillian always getting into mischief when she should be napping.... (case and point).

Apparently you need to wear a helmet when you vacuum?
Miracles will be Miracles.  When one door closes another opens.  Lance was pretty sure (like very sure) that he would be able to make a smooth transition to becoming the head coach at Corner Canyon.  We had built relationships with the players and their parents, we were comfortable and felt at home at the school and the job was truthfully his dream job at his dream location.   We went through the interview process and at the end they gave the position to a more experienced coach from a different school district.  We were devastated.  Like the nights before we found out Lance slept on the couch because he couldn't sleep and after we found out we had several sessions of tears shed and sadness.  He truthfully felt like his calling in life was taken from him and he had no purpose.  I tried to be supportive and optimistic that something else would come, but it was really really hard.

He met with the new coach a few different times and from our perspective we didn't think the new coach handled the situation well, and Lance was not offered an opportunity to stay on staff as an assistant.  At that point Lance was even more devastated than when he had initially found out he didn't get the head position.  He had no place, no opportunity to continue coaching at any level....

We searched desperately for another assistant job.  He needed, we needed to be apart of something basketball.  A friend and former nurse co-worker of mine, Ashley Wilson's husband had just gotten a new head coaching job so I texted her asking if he had any openings.  He didn't but it was that text that opened the door to a great opportunity.  Things aligned the way they were supposed to.  The next day she texted me saying Cottonwood High School was accepting applications for a new Head Basketball Coach.  Lance and I was in disbelief.  They had just hired a new coach back in March, and now in June they were hiring again?!  He applied, we waited. He interviewed.  He was offered and he accepted!

Backstory:
March/April
Ashley's Husband: Garrett was coach over Taylorsville HS.
He got the Brighton HS job.

The Cottonwood HS coach took over at Taylorsville HS.

Cottonwood hired some new coach with another coach who was a close 2nd choice.
May
Cottonwood HS's coach resigned and took a Junior College position, but took over a month to submit his official notice in writing (which postponed the principal and school districts ability to post the position).
June
Position posts, Interviews happen.  The principal interviews and believes that she is gonna probably hire the guy who originally came in 2nd during the March/April interviews.
As she contemplates who to hire Lance's name comes to her mind.  Then a flood of emails from former players, other coaches, and Corner Canyon parents (thank you) are received to the principal all in Lances' behalf.

Position offer to Lance.  He accepts!!!

Literally, the timing of everything was absolutely divine intervention.   We then spent the majority of June getting open gyms lined up, parent meetings, practices, and a week long tournament.  Here are pictures from the parent meeting where Jillian and Bennett had a blast walking around Cottonwood HS's courtyard.

We got season passes to Cowabunga Bay.  They love the slides and the lazy river.

Jillian took a scary spill on the treadmill and endured some tread marks on her back.  Luckily she was okay.
Father's Day gift:  A homemade tie rack.
